Mick Foley recently took to twitter to encourage his 1.8 million followers to check out Cody Deaner's recently launched "Giv'er for Charity" Campaign. When Cody first started wrestling, Mick Foley was one of his idols. So to say Mick's endorsement meant a lot to him is an understatement. Cody posted the following on his Facebook Page following the endorsement: "So this just happened. This is why I’ve looked up to Mick Foley for so many years. Not just because he’s one of my favourite wrestlers of all time, but because he is the first hero of mine I met in wrestling who blew me away with how down to earth and genuine he was. #ThankYouMick #MickFoley #WWE #GiverForCharity" You can read all about Cody Deaner's inspiration for his "Giv'er for Charity campaign HERE You can read the official press release for the campaign HERE Cody Deaner recently made the following announcement on his Facebook Page: This is Rahim Jamani. And, he is a very special man. Last week, I had the privilege of attending the 2018 St. Thomas Sports Spectacular. It was a fundraiser for local Special Olympics athletes. As a special guest, I signed autographs and rubbed shoulders with amazing athletes like Roberto Alomar, Larry Murphy, Anthony Alford, Diana Matheson, and fellow professional wrestler, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. While it was amazing getting to be at an event with all of these top-tier athletes, there was one athlete who ended up outshining them all - Rahim Jamani. For the second year in a row, Rahim was named the Athlete of the Year. And I was honored to sit directly beside him for the evening during dinner. When I sat down and started talking to him, I quickly found out he had to do a speech that night. He sat beside me with his speech in front of him... all four typed pages of it. As I thought about him going up to read this in a room cramped with over 650 people and elite athletes from all over the world, I just had to ask him, "Are you nervous, bud?" He looked at me with a huge smile and said, "Nope."
After his speech, Rahim got a standing ovation ... and a giant hug from "The Dragon" himself. After his speech, I got to sit with Rahim for the next few hours and have dinner with him. I came to realize that Rahim is, in fact, a huge wrestling fan and had seen me wrestle in St. Thomas numerous times over the years. He recalled to me, in detail, moments of matches I had over a decade a go that Rahim witnessed. I had a blast talking wrestling with Rahim, learning about his training regime, and his family. At one point, he innocently looked over at me and asked, "Can you cut my meat for me? It's kinda tough." I smiled ear to ear as I took his plate and cut his prime rib for him. It was delicious. I learned something that night. You can't measure someone by their accomplishments. You can only measure someone by their heart. While Rahim had achieved some amazing athletic accomplishments (and was named Athlete of the Year because of them), it was his heart that was displayed to all those in attendance that night. And he won over the room. With all those stars in the room, Rahim was clearly the brightest. That same night, they auctioned off a cartoon caricature of me, created by Rikar Art. Because of this night with Rahim, I was inspired to start the "Giv'er for Charity" campaign, where every month I will donate 100% of the proceeds from sales of this picture to a different charity. In honor of Rahim, I will be donating all of the proceeds collected in February to Rahim and his Special Olympics team. To the entire team at the St. Thomas Sports Spectacular, thank you so much for inviting me to your amazing event. To Rahim, thank you for ... well ... just being you. You are an inspiration to us all. Sincerely, Cody Deaner FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 27, 2018 Cody Deaner’s “Giv’er for Charity” Campaign The campaign to raise money for a different charity every month in 2018 Port Bruce, ON, January 27, 2018– Cody Deaner announced today that in 2018, he will be running a new campaign he is calling “Giv’er for Charity.” Cody Deaner will be teaming up with local artist, Rikar Art ©, and selling an amazing print of Rikar Art’s one-of-a-kind cartoon caricature of “The Redneck Renegade” Cody Deaner. Rikar volunteers with a variety of local organizations in the St. Thomas, ON area inspiring kids and teaching them art skills. “I saw Rikar’s artwork for the first time at the St. Thomas Sports Spectacular which was a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. He created artwork of Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, Roberto Alomar, myself, and many others. He told me I could give some of his prints away for charity if I wished. It got my mind racing and I decided that rather than just give a few prints away, I wanted to go big or go home.” – Cody Deaner At every single wrestling event that Cody Deaner is involved with in 2018, Cody will be selling these prints at his merchandise table and autographing them for $10. 100% of the proceeds from all sales of the prints will be going to charity. Which charity? That’s up to the fans… Every month, Cody will be choosing a different charity to donate to based on the choice of the fans, or a local cause that is brought to Cody's attention that he feels immediately drawn to. Cody wants to give back to his fans, so the charities he picks will be ones that are directly linked to his fans in some way. “I’ve been involved with so many different charities during my wrestling career, whether that’s the Special Olympics, or raising money for Ethan’s Journey. There are so many amazing charities out there that I knew I couldn’t just pick one. So, I thought I’d go to my fans, the “Deaner Dynasty,” for help in picking some amazing causes.” – Cody Deaner Fans can head on over to Cody's various social media outlets and start making their suggestions now. Here's what Cody wrote on his Facebook page about the surprise visit: "This is Isabelle. And today was her 88th birthday. I first met Isabelle at a small county fair wrestling show. I distinctly remember her because as I was beating my opponent up outside the ring, I remember being taken aback by this lovely old lady in the front row who seemed to purely enjoy watching me beat up the bad guy I was fighting. I immediately stopped what I was doing and gave her a big high five and whispered something to her. For the life of me, I can’t remember what. I just remember the huge smile I received after the quick little exchange. Isabelle later came to see me at my merchandise table and she told me how much she loved wrestling and how much fun she had. Her son told me I made her day that day by spending a few minutes with her... (continued below) To my surprise, she came to see me wrestle two more times after that & I was told she’s my biggest fan. A few weeks ago, her son contacted me and asked if I’d surprise Isabelle by visiting her at her nursing home for her birthday. I immediately said, yes. Before I arrived today, her family told her she had a surprise present for her birthday. Her guess was: “Is Cody going to be wrestling around here soon?” Well... we gave her one better. When I walked into the room and she turned & looked at me, I can’t describe the smile she gave me. Other than to say... it lit up the room. I told her I always remembered her from that first day I saw her because while I was trying to light up the room with my performance in the ring, she lit up the room with her smile. One of my favourite parts of the visit was when her son asked, “Want a beer?!” He then pulled out two cold ones for me and Isabelle to share together. After visiting over a brewski, Isabelle showed me her room and the poster her family made for her with pictures of us together all over it. It was truly a special time... (continued below) To my fellow wrestlers: The next time you’re wrestling, try not to get so caught up in what you’re doing. Take a minute to look around and appreciate your surroundings. If I hadn’t done that, I never would have met Isabelle. And to Isabelle: Happy birthday sweetheart. And keep smiling and lighting up the room.
